Snow Drought

Courtesy of the FAA
Here in Fairbanks snowfall is only about 60% of normal for the season thus far, but it could be worse. Here is a Friday afternoon webcam photo from Kaltag, in the western Interior. Kaltag, on the east side of the Nulato Hills, is one of the snowiest low elevation places in Interior Alaska, with an mean annual snowfall of something around 120 inches. However, as you can see, thanks to the big aloft aloft that has been place for more than two weeks now, there is no snow on the ground at all.

  1. I've been watching the Coldfoot cams - no snow there up until recently - and then only a dusting - and still looking quite barren. Interesting.

  2. The coop site at Wiseman and the FAA contractor at Bettles are reporting just one inch on the ground. The last time Bettles had just 1 inch of snow on the ground as late as Nov 12th was 1984.
